Exam panic? How to calm down in 5 minutes
Read
For the first minute, place both feet on the floor and take six steady breaths: an effortless in-breath, then a slightly longer out-breath. Do not try to switch panic off. Tell yourself: “This is exam anxiety. My body has triggered an alarm.” Labelling the response separates it from the prediction that you are certain to fail.
For the next two minutes, ground yourself. Find five things you can see, four places where your body touches clothing or the chair, and three sounds. Then loosen your hands and jaw. If you cannot find an answer, skip it; this is not another test.
Use the final two minutes for one precise action. Before going in, read only your three most important prompts. Once you have the paper, begin with an instruction you understand and note the first relevant facts you remember. If another wave of tension arrives, repeat one long out-breath and name the immediate task: “Now I am reading the question.”
