How to read the comments without taking them to heart
Read
Do not open comments without a plan, especially just before sleep or filming. Set a ten-minute window and decide your purpose in advance: moderating, collecting questions or checking the response to one specific piece. Turn off notifications outside that window.
Sort each difficult comment into one of three groups: useful information, personal preference or attack. Take one possible action from useful information. Leave preferences unanswered. Hide, block or report attacks under the platform rules — you do not need to analyse them to prove resilience.
When a sentence sticks, use thought defusion: say, “I am having the thought that this comment defines my worth,” instead of “They are right.” Then name three facts independent of that opinion, such as the piece’s purpose, the work you put in and the response of someone you trust.
When time is up, close the app and transition: stand, drink water and look away from a screen for a moment. If threats are specific, preserve the evidence, use the platform’s safety tools and consider reporting them to the appropriate authorities.
