How to spot burnout before it catches you
Read
Burnout rarely arrives as one dramatic moment. Once a week, take ten minutes to review three areas: energy, your relationship with work and your sense of effectiveness. Record specific observations from recent days rather than labelling yourself as “coping” or “not coping”.
For energy, check sleep, tension after work and your ability to rest. For your relationship with work, notice growing cynicism, irritability or avoiding people. For effectiveness, note whether simple tasks take more effort or decisions drag on. One difficult week does not settle the question; look for a pattern that persists.
Circle one signal you can influence and plan the smallest change for five days: finish at a set time, take a screen-free break or discuss priorities. Be specific with your manager: “I have three urgent tasks and capacity for two. Which takes priority?”
If exhaustion continues, worsens or makes daily functioning difficult, speak to a GP or mental health professional. This review is not a diagnosis — it is a way to notice strain earlier and choose a sensible next step.
