How to talk after a fight while emotions still run high
Read
When your body is still tense, do not try to decide immediately who is right. Say: “I need a break so I do not say something hurtful. Let’s come back to this at 7.30.” A precise time separates a pause from disappearing. During the break, do not build a case for the prosecution; walk, drink water and take a few breaths with a longer out-breath.
Before returning, write three sentences: “When this happened…”, “I felt…” and “I need/I am asking for…”. Describe behaviour, not character: “When you changed the plan without telling me, I felt overlooked. Next time, please send a quick message.” The other person first summarises what they heard, then gives their response.
Agree one small next step rather than trying to solve the whole relationship in one evening. If tension rises again, take another agreed break. If there are threats, control, violence or fear for someone’s safety in the relationship, prioritise professional or emergency help over a communication exercise together.
