The first day after a diagnosis — what to do, what not to read
Read
You do not have to understand everything on the first day. Divide a page into “I know”, “I do not know” and “next step”. Record the exact name of the diagnosis, what the clinician told you, and the date of the next contact. Put questions under “I do not know” rather than immediately searching dozens of pages for answers.
If you want to check something, choose one source recommended by your clinician or an official public health website. Avoid forums that present one person’s story as a rule, headlines promising miraculous results, and material without an author or date. Set a time limit and close the search when it ends. Do not change medication or medical instructions because of something you read online.
Look after the next few hours: eat something simple, drink water and tell one trusted person if you wish. Prepare questions for the appointment, but do not force yourself to decide your whole future today. If you develop symptoms your clinician identified as urgent, or your condition deteriorates suddenly, contact the appropriate medical service.
